Parental Involvement

I can't wait for my first Open House this year. My goal is to get a blog ready for my students, and their parents, to use by then. In any teaching situation, but in an alternative education one especially, parental involvement is crucial. I've had some parents in the past who have been incredibly uncooperative, and that makes my job so much harder. I think that by getting them involved as soon as possible and as much as possible, I will have their support and their help later on.

I never heard alternative education before. But I've learnt a little about charter schools. Are they the same thing? or the idea behind them are the same?

Parents never fail to amaze me. They range from non-responsive to over the top. One thing to keep in mind is the more communication venues you open, the better it is. It allows you to be at ease with the fact that you have done your part to keep them in the loop of things. It also shows that you truly care about your students.

I don't know much about alternative education, but I know parental involvement is essential to all kinds of education. Hope the parents will be cooperative. Good luck!

Zheng-I'm not sure what charter schools are exactly, I think they're more based on gearing students towards careers...?

My alternative school, at least, is composed of those students who for some reason or another, cannot mainstream in regluar schools. They have attitude issues, addiction problems, problems at home etc. So this offers a different kind of experiece. I only have about 30 students total, and the school itself is much smaller. They still have to pass all the regents tests though. Also, we do not give homework because that is one of the reason that our students come to us-they were failing because they either couldn't or wouldn't do homework. So although I have to have them do a lot more work in class, I know that they are getting the work done and that I am here to help them. I'd love to have the blog be a form of extra credit or something so that they're still involved at home.
